Unrealized Shadows

22"x15"

Watercolor, Oil Pastel, Colored Pencil on Paper

My parents longed for a son, yet fate made me their daughter. Under the shadow of China's one-child policy, they were denied the chance for more children. At times, I carry a weighty guilt, as if my existence snuffed out the possibility of a younger brother. This artwork captures the uncharted paths my family could never tread. Vibrant hues and playful elements infuse the piece with childlike innocence, starkly juxtaposed against the imagery of violence. It serves as a reflection on the profound effects of the One Child Policy on families and the fabric of society.
